Maria da Graça Carvalho, delivered a key note speech. During her intervention, she exchanged ideas and perspectives about industry's needs in order to shape an appropriate legislative framework and budget in which Europe can prosper.

The event looked at the current state of Europe's manufacturing sector and discussed how it can contribute to sustainable growth in Europe and what the EU can do to help support its industry. The discussion covered:

  • Getting European industrial policy right
  • Strategies for aligning growth and regulation
  • The need to maintain a traditional but sustainable manufacturing base in Europe
  • The role of investments in research, development and demonstration
  • How the EU can create a long term regulatory framework which encourages investment and innovation
  • Fair competition in a global world.

The manufacturing sector in Europe employs over 34 million people and can contribute significantly to kick-start the economies in the EU member states. The companies in the sector are global leaders in clean and low-carbon technologies and aim to keep their industrial basis in Europe while contributing to the EU's sustainability and competitiveness targets. Regulatory uncertainties and investment bottlenecks however make it difficult.
