Intervenções Públicas Debate com a Associação International dos editores de publicações científicas

Discursos | 07-02-2012

Today in the European Parliament, Maria da Graça Carvalho and  the International Association of Scientific, Technical & Medical Publishers organized a breakfast brief on Science Publishing: Enabling deeper, better and smarter discovery in the age of HORIZON 2020 (see list of participants).

During the meeting it was discussed how innovation in scientific publishing can enable scientists/entrepreneurs to move scientific and technological development forward, can foster an informed engagement of citizens and the civil society and why sustainability for new business models is a basic prerequisite for a successful future science communication.

Maria da Graça Carvalho introductory remarks touched on 3 key areas: "the need to ensure scientific publications of real quality, secondly, the use of new technologies in the drive to further excellence and cooperation between the top researchers, and finally, the use of new technologies as a tool in their own right - and not simply a support for traditional printed media"

Scientific information becomes ever more wide-ranging and overwhelming, making it more challenging for an individual to find and manage the necessary information. At the same time, scientific and technological progress requires more sophisticated and creative ways to make use of the information. New and innovative tools to harvest, link, manage and combine existing findings and ideas are therefore crucial in ensuring they are exploited to the fullest.

The European Commission published end of 2011 the proposal for HORIZON 2020 - The Framework programme for Research and Innovation (2014-2020). Optimization of accessibility and broadening dissemination to scientific results should be supported by HORIZON 2020. Open Access is listed as one measure to achieve this aim.
