Work in Parliament COVID-19: PSD MEPs question European Commission about measures to support the sectors of Culture and Creative Industries

Questions to the Commission and the Council | 15-04-2020

Maria da Graça Carvalho sent a written question to the European Commission (EC), co-signed by MEPs Lídia Pereira and Álvaro Amaro, addressing the impact of covid-19 on Culture and Creative Industries and asking for more information on measures taken or take at this level.

In the written question, it is recalled that “the cultural and creative industries play a fundamental role, not only for leisure, but for the education of citizens”, this sector being “one of those most affected” by the pandemic, due to containment measures adopted by most countries.

MEPs also draw attention to the need to protect the rights of consumers affected, for example, by postponing or canceling shows.

In particular, the EC is asked:

  • What short and long-term measures does the Commission intend to take to mitigate the effects on this sector?
  • What funds is the Commission considering allocating to the cultural and creative industries (in addition to the Creative Europe Programme)? Does the Commission intend to create a solidarity fund complementary to national support from Member States?
  • How does the Commission intend to ensure that the measures taken do not jeopardise the Community ‘acquis’ of consumer protection legislation?
