The six PSD MEPs sent this Friday a letter to the four presidents of the European Institutions (European Commission, European Council, European Parliament and European Central Bank) and to the Portugal's Prime Minister, António Costa, with information also being addressed to the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

The letter was sent with a document in which MEPs present 17 measures to respond to the Covid-19 crisis and demand a common solution of an urgent nature, capable of producing immediate effects and always based on the value of solidarity. Specific measures include:

  • Immediate 2 billion euros investment in the development of the vaccine and treatments for COVID-19;
  • Clear defence of “Coronabonds” or a further instrument for debt mutualisation, establishment of unemployment reinsurance, reinforcement of European funds with no co-financing rate, adoption of a global economic recovery plan;
  • Proposal to adopt a rescue plan for the tourism sector and protect agriculture and fisheries (supply of essential goods). Create strategic reserves of essential goods, to be managed by the Civil Protection;
  • Proposal to extend the Brexit transitional period.

“This set of measures is essential to address short-term woes, to guarantee the survival of the social and economic fabric in the medium term and to relaunch Europe economically, socially and culturally in the medium and long term.” explain the six members of the PSD, Paulo Rangel, Lídia Pereira, José Manuel Fernandes, Maria da Graça Carvalho, Álvaro Amaro and Cláudia Monteiro de Aguiar.
