Work in Parliament Maria da Graça Carvalho defends the adoption of a Global Ocean Treaty

Other Activities | 09-03-2020

Maria da Graça Carvalho signed the petition “Ocean Declaration: Our oceans sustain all life on Earth – now they need us to protect them”, urging governments and leaders to create a global network of ocean sanctuaries covering 30 % of the world's oceans by 2030.

The ongoing negotiations towards a Global Ocean Treaty under the UN are a historic opportunity to shape the future of the oceans and achieve the proposed ambitious vision. Thus, the petition asks governments to act urgently and adopt a Global Ocean Treaty by 2020, with the ability to create a global network of ocean sanctuaries - spaces where marine life is protected from the many threats it faces.
