Work in Parliament The EU’s role in protecting and restoring the world’s forests (A9-0143/2020 - Stanislav Polčák)

Explanations of Vote | 15-09-2020

Forests are sources of life and their safeguard must become a priority for the whole Union. The Action Plan to protect and restore the world’s forests must be inclusive and consider all kind of actors able to protect, restore and manage sustainably this environment. This resolution is calling for a swift adoption of the draft plan that the Commission is due for the end of this year. Several pieces of legislation needs to be updated and modernised, among which the Timber Regulation. Monitoring, assessment and standards for certification are also addressed and these aspects are particularly important in light of the increase of fires, deforestation and illegal trade practices. I voted in favour because it is a balanced approach to create a true sustainable management of our forests. The forest strategy will be a cornerstone to protect our biodiversity, but also to create a virtuous cycle also to sustain the economic value of wood and its use in many industrial sectors.
