Work in Parliament Mobilisation of the European Union Solidarity Fund to provide assistance to Portugal, Spain, Italy and Austria (A9-0105/2020 - José Manuel Fernandes)

Explanations of Vote | 17-06-2020

I firmly supported the report aiming to respond in a rapid, efficient and flexible manner to the emergencies that occurred in the Azores and Spain in 2019 and in Italy and Austria in 2020. The fund wants to show solidarity with the population of regions struck by those natural disasters. Due to climate change, natural disasters will become more and more violent and more and more recurrent. The Fund is only a curative instrument and climate change requires primarily a preventive policy in line with the Paris Agreement. The Fund could undergo a revision to include a wider definition of the fields of intervention, taking into consideration state-of-the-art scientific opinions and long-term trends about climate change effects.
