Work in Parliament CCS and EU Policy Developments

Meetings | 24-09-2013

Today in the European Parliament, Maria da Graça Carvalho participated in the high level breakfast discussion on the future of CCS in Europe. This was organized by Chris Davies, ENVI Rapporteur of the own initiative report (INI) on Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS); together with Vicky Ford, ITRE Rapporteur of the opinion CCS INI and the Zero Emissions Platform (ZEP).

CCS is of critical importance to achieve EU low carbon goals, and a ten year delay of deployment would increase the cost of power sector decarbonisation by 1 trillion dollars globally, according to the International Energy Agency. Early political action is therefore necessary to enable CCS deployment - without such action Europe will face severe environmental, social and economic consequences.

As the European Parliament ENVI and ITRE Committees begin to discuss the INI Reports, the seminar pretended to exchange views on how Europe can ensure that CCS receives the support it needs and is included as a key component of the 2030 climate and energy framework.
