Work in Parliament Debate: How to complete the full innovation cycle?

Other Activities | 20-03-2012

Maria da Graça Carvalho hosted a debate in the European Parliament on 'How to complete the full innovation cycle' - Lessons for HORIZON2020 from commercialisation support actions for R&D results in nanomaterial and production.

Too much of the knowledge generated by EC R&D projects never finds its way into the market because the current programmes do not cover the full innovation chain in a seamless manner. We lose exploitable know-how at multiple stages in the current process.

The European Institutions are now shaping "HORIZON2020". In time for a contribution to our reflections, the aims of the debate were to

  • better understand the weaknesses of the current FP7 in terms of exploitation of results
  • illustrate possible approaches to turning R&D results into business
  • discuss how to strengthen HORIZON2020's innovation performance concretely

During the opening speech, Maria da Graça Carvalho said that the matter of how to complete the full innovation cycle requires "indeed" further attention, analysis and discussion. Ms carvalho also expressed her particularly interest in discovering new ideas about how best to create a globally competitive IP policy in Europe.

The event was co-organised by a group of innovation professionals with long-standing experience in the exploitation of public-funded R&D in the frame of ProNano, an EC-funded Supporting Action for the market uptake of R&D results.
