Copernicus is the new European Earth observation system that replaces the Global Monitoring system for Environment and Security (GMES), and was given a budget of € 3.79 billion for 2014-2020.

This new system aims at providing free of charge information in the areas of land, marine, atmosphere, climate change, emergency management and security monitoring. This data would be gathered from several Earth observation satellites and a multitude of sensors on the ground, at sea or in the air.
